About us
Department of Aeronautics
Is a scientific-teaching and research organisational unit within the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences, University of Zagreb. It delivers undergraduate and graduate aeronautics study programmes and conducts research in the field of aeronautics. The Department was established in 1992, following the introduction of the Aeronautics study programmes, and has since continuously developed its educational and research activities in aeronautics.

Hands-on Learning & Research
Laboratories of the department
Teaching and research activities at the Department of Aeronautics are organised through several specialised laboratories that support undergraduate and graduate coursework as well as aeronautics research.
Among them are the Aerodynamics Laboratory, the Laboratory for Air Traffic Control, Laboratory for Aircraft emissions, Laboratory for testing in aeronautical engineering and the Flight Simulation Laboratory.
For practical pilot training, the Department collaborates with FPZ’s Croatian Aviation Training Centre (HZNS/CATC) at Lučko Airfield, which operates a fleet comprising Cessna 172 (R/N), Diamond DV-20, Piper PA-44-180, and an Elite S923 FNPT II/MCC simulator.

Our work-projects
We have actively participated in numerous scientific research and professional projects, contributing both as lead coordinators and project partners in collaboration with national and international institutions.
Achieving human-machine collaboration with artificial situational awareness
The project will develop and test an AI Assistant Application providing adaptable human-centric support to enhance air traffic controller’s (ATCO) performance and to reduce ATCO’s workload despite high task complexity.
Strengthening Research and Innovation Excellence in Autonomous Aerial Systems
Its focus is on advancing autonomous aerial systems for applications in smart agriculture, forestry, and logistics, while enhancing scientific excellence, innovation management, technology transfer, and citizen involvement through strong international cooperation.
AI Situational Awareness Foundation for Advancing Automation
The AISA project addresses this by introducing artificial situational awareness into en-route ATC, focusing on transparency and adaptability. It will develop strategies to provide controllers with the right information to build trust in automation and explore methods for systems to adapt to novel circumstances.
