The AISA project (AI Situational Awareness Foundation for Advancing Automation) was presented at The ENGAGE Thematic Challenge 2 Workshop – Automation, AI and ML, organised by the University of Westminster and EUROCONTROL within the SESAR ENGAGE project. The workshop was held online on September 3rd 2021, and the AISA project was presented by Tomislav Radišić, the project coordinator.
The AISA project was part of Session 2, together with three other SESAR projects – MAHALO, NOSTROMO, and TAPAS. Participants had the opportunity to learn about the main objectives of the AISA project, the progress achieved so far, and the activities planned for the next phase.

The presentation provided an overview of the proposed AISA system and explained the experimental plan that will be implemented in the coming months. This plan will include simulations and evaluations that aim to bring the main project results and demonstrate the system’s potential in advancing automation.
The emphasis of the session was on how artificial intelligence and machine learning could support situational awareness in air traffic management. The AISA project focuses on developing a foundation for advancing automation while maintaining human oversight and decision-making quality.
Furthermore, the AISA project presented a detailed view of data preparation, simulation with AISA input, and evaluation methodology. These activities are part of the project’s continuous effort to test and validate the proposed system in realistic operational environments.
The workshop allowed participants to exchange ideas and discuss upcoming steps within the SESAR ENGAGE project.
